Welcome to Downtime! ADVANCE has created this column for all HIM professionals to share their hobbies and what they do to unwind. This is a way to read all about what others in the field do to relax and have some fun outside of work.

"The Portland area is very diverse. Our HIM department has talented people who do a lot of different things, from singing in a band to volunteering at the local food shelter, so everybody does their own thing. It's a city environment, but it doesn't take long to go out on a lake and go kayaking, or go to the beach and lay in the sun, so it's a great place to be."

"One of my HIM directors, one of the managers and I joined boot camp at work at 5:30 a.m.. It was a 6-week, 3-times-a-week thing and we are in the last week-what our trainer called "hell week." It's been really interesting and we've actually signed up for the next 6 weeks.

"We run a lot; we do calisthenics-it's called a military training. And it's non-stop for a solid hour. We've definitely seen a difference. It's killed us and it's exhausting; I actually come to work, do that 5:30-6:30 a.m., go back home, shower and get back by 7:30 a.m., so it's a crazy morning Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

"This was a pilot group, and it's worked so well they're going to do it at all our sites. Trying to keep your employees healthy is an important thing, especially in this day and age of health care reform."

Downtime Archives

Hi Philip. Your Downtime segment ran in our Jan. 14, 2008 Print edition. I don't believe we were running the column online at that point, and I don't think we were archiving those columns yet either.

So sorry!

I wrote to you about a year and a half ago. Since then, I have moved and cannot locate the magazine article which had a picture of me singing in an opera company. Is this available on line? If it is, is there a way I could retrieve this from the archives? One person from the opera company is visiting and would like to see this. If it is any help, I used to be a Medical Administrative Assistant from Respiratory.
