MT Has Seen Pay Decrease

View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article

I really like being an MT, but for the first time in my career, since 1975, I have seen my pay decrease instead of go up, due to off-shoring and the advent of speech recognition. The cost of living continually goes up yet for the first time, instead of a pay increase we get a pay decrease. However, we are encouraged to continue our education, strive for a registered medical transcriptionist (RMT) and certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) credential. (I am a CMT.) There are more demands on turnaround times, requirements to work all the time, and needing to schedule holidays off. We are perceived as machines and not people who have a life. I used to encourage people to go into this profession because there is generally always a need, and I did make more money than I would have anywhere else because of my abilities. This is no longer the case. I no longer encourage anyone to pursue this profession if they want a life, because it seems I no longer have one. I will more than likely continue this profession until I am able to retire, unless something better comes along.
