Ask the ICD-10 Experts: May 11, 2016

Q: If a physician states, "anemia of chronic disease" and the patient also has CKD [chronic kidney disease], do I assume the link and code anemia of chronic kidney disease or do I code anemia of other chronic disease and CKD?

A: Without the benefit of being able to query and verify the specific chronic disease involved that relates to the anemia, only the anemia of other chronic disease and the CKD can be reported.  Anemia can be related to a number of chronic conditions including neoplastic disease.
