I really enjoyed reading the Hands-on Help column about coding leadership, but I feel that many coding "leaders" are happy with the status quo. Most organizational leaders are not aware of the role coding plays in their organization's financial health. Even if they have a clue, coding professionals are looked upon as "clerical" staff and not the educated professionals they are.
To position ourselves "to contribute" our "coding expertise" and "fit into the broader organization," the leaders need to better understand their organization's revenue cycle and the role coding professionals play. The revenue cycle runs well when there is accurate documentation by providers, accurate translation by coding staff, accurate and timely billing, follow up of collections and compliance review.
Until organizational leaders understand the revenue cycle and how each part is integrated with each other, "coding leadership" will remain where they are today.
I remain hopeful that the contribution of coding professionals will one day be truly recognized for the important role it plays in the "broader organization."
